The VAM-40A was the second denticle clash reported for Morgan Dies. The first discovery was the 1878-S VAM-17A which was reported in December 2001. The VAM-40A didn't follow until March 2004 when variety specialist Bill Fivaz reported his discovery. Quantities of these coins are not readily available.
<gallery mode="packed" widths=400px heights=400px perrow=3>1921p_vam40a_c.jpg|Part of the reason they are seldom identified is the fact that the denticle clash looks a lot like the typical damage that occurs in normal transport and handling.

|The coin also has quadrupled stars and lots of rework on the die. As pictured below, the die has been extensively polished on the obverse. Finally, the reverse contains the "scribble scratches" that have become a popular research topic recently.

|Extensive die polish in the nose, mouth and upper lip area.

Notice the die polish in all the recessed areas.

More polishing and rework are evidenced by the line across the M and the fine lines emerging from the denticles.

<br /gallery
