Date

Can the same die pair be correctly classified as two different base VAMs and, thus, have no basis for a "kill?" Notice that left lower inside loop of the first 8 (second digit) appears doubled for the LDS, but not the EDS. Notice that both coins appear to show a repunched mint mark. Markers to follow.

D-Void Redux

The attribution of the EDS coin as an 1883-O VAM-10 was met by considerable resistance in the [1883-O Imposter] post.

Eye and Nose

The following matching markers span die states. A vertical scratch extends downward from the apex of the angle of the eye. A diagonal scratch extends downward from the nares and angles to the right. Polishing lines cross in the valleys of the locks.

LIBERTY

The broken upper loop of the B ([RayNat Post]). The right foot of the R. Diagonal line upper loop of the R. Enjoy the depth of the Peckinpah coin.

Wing Gaps

The polishing lines in the left wing gap do not vary all that much across die states. Unlike the mint mark shown above. Put on the TinFoil and you will find a persistent marker in the cleft between feathers at the back of the head.

Right Wing Tip

The line at the right wing tip of the EDS does not persist for the LDS. Well, it is barely there. Notice the beveling of field in this area for the LDS. Would you settle for a persistent die chip on the upper wing border directly below the space between I and n of In of IGWT?

Tail Feathers

Markers. Notice the distinctive "line" extending from the right thigh to the cleft between the second and third horizontal tail feathers for the LDS. At first glance, this line does not appear to hold for the EDS. On close inspection, you may agree that there are a series of lines in this location on the EDS. They combined and staved off the fate of wear. Perhaps similar to what happened in the D-Void. That is my explanation.

Ear

Similar to the apparent doubling of the first 8 of the date for the LDS, so goes the ear for the LDS. It seems that a die may be doubled due to the hubbing or due to the wear (die or press). Should doubling from hubbing and doubling from wear be at parity for classification regardless of the etiology? It seems that I may preach to the choir when suggest they stay within the same base VAM. But when the LDS is discovered before the EDS, the EDS, once discovered, cannot qualify for the LDS description. The EDS gets a different base VAM. What is to become of the LDS with the "kill"? There is no home for it. Hard to avoid it seems. But in this case, the EDS appears to have been discovered first. The LDS doubling could be a note (revision) in the description with no new sub-variety or base variety. Is there a convention that wear doubling does not qualify for classification? Akin to strike doubling? Both may be press wear more so than die wear. Is this known one way or the other? But without the EDS, I don't imagine the etiology of doubling, in some cases, can be known. Is the die, in the case of wear related doubling, literally doubled or has the press lost tolerance? Thank you for any additional comments.
