1921-D VAM-5B Tripled Date & Stars, Die Break Inside S

5B (revised) IV 4 D2a (Tripled Date & Stars, Die Break Inside S, Scribbling Die Scratches) (189) I-2 R-6
Reverse D2a - Die crack thru tops of STATES letters with small bean shaped die break inside bottom loop of second S.
Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg.
Die marker - Heavy curved die scratch at bottom left of upper tail feathers.
Comments: This is a "Bean Bottom S" variety. Click on the Bean Bottom S VAMworld page for links to the other bean bottom VAMs.
This may be related to (perhaps double or triple listed as...) 1921-D VAM-13 and 1921-D VAM-11A.
Take note of the size of the bean in the lower serif of the "S", but also the cracks between the "E" and the "S", which are similar but distinct from other bean bottom "S" varieties:

Leroy has listed this VAM for scribbling scratches. Although it does not stand out in this photo, the curved scribble just above the eagle's left toe on this foot (toward the bottom right of the photo) really jumps out when looking at a specimen in person:
