1921-D VAM-1M Horned O in OF and Break at top of S

Discovered by Herb Zepke, September 2000. Revised June 2007.
1M (revised) IV 1 D2a (Die Breaks S-O, Scribbling Die Scratches Tail Feathers) (189) I-2 R-5
Obverse IV 1-Slight doubling/tripling on some left stars
Reverse D2a - Small die break at top of upper serif of second S in STATES and tiny die breaks at top left and right of O in OF. Different than VAM 1G die break. Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg, between eagle's left wing and body and in middle of both wings. Die marker - Heavy horizontal die polishing line to right of lower berries in first cluster to left of wreath bow.
Comments: On the VAM-1M, a die break has deformed the last S in states, adding metal above the upper serif. Also note that the VAM-1M is a Bean Bottom S variety with the bean break above the lower curve of this second S in STATES. This is not a full "bean," and Leroy says it is too small to list in the description.

Additional breaks are seen at the top left and right of the O in OF giving it small horns. These horns are slightly less pronounced than the VAM-1V and the late die state VAM-1F which are different “Horned O” varieties. There is also a thin die scratch emerging from the denticles toward the F in OF, disappearing and then reemerging out the bottom of the F.
Extensive radial cracking can also be seen across almost a third of the reverse, connecting the tops of many letters.

The VAM-1M is also a scribbling scratches variety, and Leroy has now added the scratches to the listing:

Now, as if this VAM doesn't have enough going on already...this is also a "bean bottom S" variety, although the bean is too small for Leroy to list. Check it out in the top photo of this page.
