Discovered May 2007
11B IV 9 - D2a (Doubled & Tripled Date & Stars, Scribbling Die Scratches) (189) I-2 R-5
Reverse D2a - Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg and between eagle's left wing and body. Die marker - Single short horizontal polishing line in space to right of eagle's right leg.
Comments: . These scratches are relatively shallow, but they are numerous and quite curvy ("scribbly," if you will).
LVA Plate Photos
Scribbling scratches. There is also a raised dot that is more visible in the next photos:
Note the dot in this photo. It is not listed in the description of the variety. Leroy comments, "Dot on TF too small to mention.":
Here is a crude attempt to show the primary scratches that one would see under magnification, plus the dot. The main scratch is the horizontal scratch coming out of the eagle's right leg:
First two stars to the left, doubled/tripled as with the other obverse stars. There is a die crack from the bottom of the first left star (the right one in this photo) to the rim, but the chatter above this star in this photo is a field scratch, not a die feature.
Here we see four cracks radiating from the D in UNITED:
Here is a "hand drawn" overlay to better show these cracks:
EDS of this variety shows die polish between ED in UNITED and D to right wing
Note: This is also a "Bean Bottom S" variety with a very tiny bean in the lower loop of the second S in STATES.
