1898-S VAM-8 Near Date, S Tilted Right

Discovered by Jay Galst, February 1980.
8 III2 5 - C3d (Near Date, S Tilted Right) (188) I-2 R-3
Obverse III2 5 - Date set further left than normal.
Reverse C3d - Mint mark tilted slightly to the right.

1. This coin was struck after the 1898-S VAM8A - from the same dies that were well reworked. On the VAM 8 it is really hard to tell the die "had" a repunched second 8.

Additional Photos:

Note the PL surface from a good reworking of the die.

Note the die crack that came after the die produced VAM8A.

Very hard to see repunching of the 8.

There is a trace bit of evidence that the die HAD a repunched 8.

Gouges in the hair D have been lightened up considerably since production of the 8A.

No trace of the neck gouge remain.

This gouge appears non-the-worse for the die reworking.
Phenomenal job removing the gouges!
