1897-S VAM-16 S Set High, Thread-like Die Expression, Engraved Wreath Leaves

Discovery 2017 by Mitch Hill. Revised 2017 by Brian Haight
16 (revised) III2 1 - C3e (S Set High, Thread-like Die Expression, Engraved Wreath Leaves) (?) I-3 R-6
Obverse III2 1 Die 1- Date at left edge of normal lateral position. Fairly early die state shows numerous die cracks and fine roughness on surface of Liberty head that likely lead to early die retirement due to faulty heat treatment.
Curved thread-like die impression above top right cotton leaf.

Die 2- Date at left edge of normal lateral position. Very slightly doubled top edge of right cotton boll. Die Martker - Several diagonal polishing lines below inner ear fill and one at top right outside of inner ear fill.
Reverse C3e - IV S mint mark set slightly high. Fine engraved lines at stem of two leaves on left wreath above N in ONE.
