1891-O VAM-8 O Set High

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley, February 1974. Revised 2009.
8 (revised) III2 1- C3e (O Set High) (181) I-2 R-3
Obverse III2 1 - Slightly doubled ear at lower inside. Closed 9.
Reverse C3e - III O mint mark set upright and high.

Comments:
1. The photos below are of die cracks on an ANACS attributed VAM-8 coin. A lack of cracks does not mean it is not a VAM-8. Remember the primary classification for VAM-8 is a C3e reverse, O set high and the III2 1 obverse. Do not use the cracks or breaks as a primary diagnostic as you may have an early die state VAM-8 without the cracks. The piece below is most likely just before the reverse die break on the ME of AMERICA, of the VAM-8A .
2. Note: Occurs with rotated reverse of 50-120 degrees CCW.

The mint mark for VAM-8/8A is set well above the position guide, but not as high as the C3i Very High Mint mark of 1891-O VAM-19.
