Discovery September, 2011 by Patrick Mullen, Revised 2016 by John Higginbotham
1I (revised) III2 1 – C3a (Many Die Breaks Both Wreaths) (188,190) I-4 R-5/6
Obverse III2 1 - VAM-1i Die 1 - Date slightly left of center of normal date lateral position. Occurs with 190 reeds and advanced stage of reverse die breaks.
1890-S VAM-1i Die 2 - Date at right edge of normal lateral position. 188 reeds. Later die states develop radial die crack and displaced field break at right dot between S & U and is retired with advanced stage of reverse die cracks and breaks.
Reverse C3a – Die cracks the length of both wreaths with breaks at each leaf cluster with obverse Die 1 LDS and Die 2. Tiny die chips at top of each wing. Radial die break at CA in AMERICA. Die basined with too much curvature causing rounded rim and excess die pressure in middle.
LVA Comments 2016 Submittal:
1. die 2 advanced die breaks same as die1, Obverse has radial die crack at right dot which likely caused obverse die retirement & replacement by die 1
2. Cant divide VAM-1i into various small breaks as are so many all over: where would I divide them up? just label early stage & late stage or EDS or LDS with die 1 & die 2 obverse
3- Die 1 reverse is LDS of die 2
4- Die 2 determined to be same as VAM 10D - 10D was eliminated.
