1889-P VAM-23B Slanted Date, Worn Polished Obverse Die

Discovered as VAM 7A by Brent Fogelberg, May 2000. Redesignated VAM 23B, 2020.
Revised November 2020. Revised January 2021.
23B(revised) III2 21 · C3a (Slanted Date, Worn Polished Obverse Die) (190)
Obverse III2 21 – Heavy die polishing removing die clash marks at neck, lower right hair vee, lips, cap back at ribbon and some roughness in fields. Roughness quickly reappears and new light die clash single and later two diagonal lines appears at jaw-neck junction with die chip still later at neck point. Die retired shortly thereafter.
Die martker - Diagonal die polishing lines in ER of LIBERTY.

Reverse C3a – Die not changed since no die clash marks appeared, except for very faint vertical line at n of In. Die fields relatively smooth with little wear. Die re-used with VAM 7 III2 7 obverse.
Die marker - Fine die polishing lines at wing-neck gap, same as VAM 5G.

Comments:

  1. Heavy clashed obverse die [of 1889-P VAM-23A] was severely polished to remove these strong die clash marks resulting in VAM 23B. (LVA 9/2020)
  2. Reverse die is retained [from VAM 23A] with little wear and is not polished. (LVA 9/2020)
  3. There are five die sequences. 1. Un-clashed Obverse with no die roughness and single clashed Reverse. 2. Clashed Reverse & Un-clashed Obverse. 3. Single clashed Obverse and double clashed Reverse. 4. Single clashed Obverse and single clashed Reverse. 5. Double clashed Obverse and single clashed Reverse.
  4. Die sequence #4 and #5 are by far and away the most common.
  5. Not mentioned in the official description are the numerous polishing lines in the Eagle's neck, top of the breast, left and right wings.
  6. First reported Double clashed Reverse with a single clashed Obverse on 1/7/2023.
