1889-O VAM-6 Doubled 18-9
Discovered by George Mallis, July 1964.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
6 III2 3 - C3f (Doubled 18-9, O Set High) (181) I-4 R-5
Obverse III2 3 - The 1 and 8 are strongly doubled at the bottom. 9 in date doubled slightly at top and strongly at bottom inside of lower loop. Sometimes a spike shows below the top crossbar of the 1.
Reverse C3f - O set High
1. Easily confused with VAM-5, but the doubling here is much stronger.
LVA Plate Photos:
Fantastic doubling at the bottom of the 1 8
Also note the small rim cud below the date on this LDS example. This cud is too small to be listed. This VAM also has an unlisted clashed state. See 1889-O VNA Varieties.
The reverse has the Mint Mark set clearly closer
to the ribbons above it than the letters below it. There is also a slight tilt to the right.
Only one reverse die has been noted paired with this obverse.
