1888-O VAM-15 O/O and Double Die Reverse
Discovered by Steve Sabella, November 1980.
This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM.
15 III2 1 C3g (O/O Low, Doubled Legend) (181) I-3 R-4
Reverse C3g - III O mint mark doubled well below the bottom outside. Doubled right wreath and eagle's left wing edge towards rim. F-AMERICA-AR, right star and TRUST strongly doubled towards rim.
1. The 1888-O VAM-15 has a strongly re-punched mint mark with the remains of an underlying O appearing below and slightly right of the strong mint mark. This VAM appears to be quite rare and tough to find in high grades.
2. Beware of VAM 12. It is an "evil mimic" of the VAM 15 and has a doubled reverse, but not as strong. It also has a repunched O, but not exactly the same.
