1885-S VAM-9 885 in Denticles, S/S
Discovered by Herb Zepke, February, 1999.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
9 III2 7 · C3b (885 in Denticles, S/S) (185) I-3 R-5
Obverse III2 7– Tops of 885 showing in denticles as raised curved bars in single denticle space below first 8 and in single denticle space below second 8, and as raised straight top bar in single denticle space below 5.
Reverse C3b- S mint mark strongly doubled with original showing as vertical spike to left, a thin diagonal line to left of upper loop, a curved line on right inside of lower loop, and a thin line on right inside of upper loop.
1. This obverse shared with VAM-8 and VAM-9.
2. This reverse shared with VAM-6 and VAM-9.
3. This VAM is the same reverse as the Top 100 VAM-6 with a repunched S over S mint mark. The 1885-S/S is under appreciated for its rarity, but the VAM-9 with a repunched date in the denticles is almost unknown. It is a truly rare coin and seldom encountered.
