1880-P VAM-33A Doubled Date, Partial E on Reverse

Discovered by Brian Raines, August 2002. Revised 2010. Revised April 2019
33A(revised) III2 33 · C3a (Doubled Date, Partial E on Reverse) ( ? ) I-3 R-6
Obverse III2 33 – Entire Date doubled. 1 is doubled strongly at top of upper crossbar. First 8 doubled on surface at bottom right outside of lower loop. Second 8 doubled at lower loop, 0 doubled at left and right bottom outside.
Reverse C3a – Die 1 - Clashed die with partial E below eagle’s tail feathers on left side. Only middle back and middle serif of E shows very weakly. Set lower and weaker E than VAM-39A.

Comments:
1. Rare and in demand with very few specimens known.
2. Later die state of VAM-33.
3. April 2019 confirmed this variety does in fact have a weak E clash.

On higher grade specimens there are two more markers. The first is a die scratch on the Reverse that runs from the bottom of the "E" up diagonally thru the "D" on up to th denticles in the "UNITED". You can also see this die scratch in John Robert's photo above. Photos below courtesy of Alan Scott.
