1879-S VAM-77A PAF, Engraved Wing Feather From 1878-S, 8 Upper Tailfeathers
This is a Reverse of '78 (PAF) coin and a Top 100 VAM variety.
77A III2 2e- B2e (PAF, Engraved Wing Feather From 1878-S, 8 Upper Tailfeathers) (?) I-5 R-7
Obverse III2 2e – Die not polished again.
Reverse B2e – Die over polished with TED STA and eagle's right wing tip very shallow, heavy polishing lines in fields and thin engraved left upper tail feather with small extreme left engraved tail feather removed.
1. In addition to the 'eight upper tail feathers' feature, die polishing has removed almost all of the distinctive 'W' pattern inside the bow opening.
2. Later die state than VAM-9. Additional polishing of reverse die has made TED STA letters very shallow, removed the left engraved upper tail feather, made the right extra tail feather a thin sliver and the two left normal upper tail feathers thin and shallow.

die polishing has removed almost all of the distinctive 'W' pattern inside the bow opening.
The discovery of two engraved feathers in an unusual place on the VAM 9 led to the identification of two additional 1879-S, Reverse of 1879-S VAMs, which are the VAM 77 and the VAM 77A. [CLM 6/2010]
While the die marker line on the left side of the cotton leaf is stronger on the VAM 77A, it can be seen on the VAM 9.
