1879-S VAM-107 Hair Ribbon, Engraved Wreath Leaves

Obverse III2 56 – Slightly doubled date with 1 at lower edge of upper crossbar, 8 at lower left outside of upper loop, 7 at crossbar lower edge and bottom edge of vertical shaft and 9 at left outside of both loops. Wide striated and segmented die gouge 0.437" long starting at rear of Liberty head neck as very wide and high raised striated gouge of 0.045" by 0.045" and continuing to right in hair gap above 9 as wide striated gouge, hair gap above first right star as wide raised bump with faint horizontal lines, and some lines to the left, and then to hair above third right star as several lines. Longest and widest associated series of segmented die gouges known for the Morgan dollar obverse and reverse. (Revised)At a later die state, die crack develops to right of 9 up to hair. Reverse C3aq – Slightly faint engraving on two wreath outer leaves opposite ON and two inner leaves opposite UN in left wreath to strengthen over polished leaf portions. Different die than for VAM 106 and used with later obverse die state.
Die Marker - Single horizontal die polishing line at top inside of wreath bow over to right on top of bow and outside. (Formerly VAM1B1)
