1878-S VAM-28 Die Scratch on Wing, Engraved Wing Feather
Discovered by David DeRuiter, November 1979.
This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety.
28 II1 - B2o (Die Scratch on Wing, Engraved Wing Feather) (184) I-3 R-4
Obverse II1 - Same die as Die 1 of VAM 8 with die scratch in front of forehead and one between lower cotton leaf ends. Some LDS specimens show faint vertical die crack in back of scratch on forehead of VAM 8.
1. Reverse also used for VAM-16. and VAM-20.
2. Obverse also used for die 1, VAM-8.
3. Vertical scratch through lower part of eagle's right wing. R in TRUST not Broken. Die chip on E of UNITED and in middle of eagle's chest.
LVA Plate Photos:
VAM-28 does not have doubled E PLURIB. (VAM-16 has a strongly doubled U)
VAM-28 has horizontal die scratch between ends of lower two cotton leaves found on VAM-8 die 1.
