1878-S VAM-22 DDO "RIB"

Discovered by Jim Baxter, September 1977. Revised 2010
This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM and a Top 30 1878-S Variety.
22 (revised) II 9 ∙ B2g (Doubled motto, S Set Left) (185) I-5 R-6
Obverse II 9 – All motto letters strongly doubled. Doubled 1,2,4,,5 and 6 right stars. 1 and 7 in date doubled at top right. First 8 doubled on lower left outside of upper loop and top inside of both loops. Second 8 tripled at left inside of upper loop. Fourth right star is doubled, but not broken. Some die states vertical die polishing lines in fields.
Reverse B2g – Small III S mint mark set left and slightly high. R in Trust is not broken. Some die states show vertical die polishing lines in fields and over polished tail feathers and lower part of eagle's right wing.

1. Wing-Leg area is over polished. No engraved feather is present.
2. The 1878-S VAM-22 shares an obverse with the 1878-S VAM-77 and VAM-111.

4th star pictured below is not broken, and actually has an extra point

The excessive reverse die polishing in the next 2 pictures help cement the VAM 22 variety over the others. Note that early die states of VAM-22 do not have this excessive polishing.

Note the early die state of VAM-22 can have a horizontal die scratch in the tailfeathers. The left side of the photo below shows a late die state coin. The right side shows an early die state with the die scratch in the tailfeathers.
