1878-P VAM-39 7/8 Tailfeather 7/5 variety

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, April 1965.
This coin is a Hit List 40 Morgan VAM.
39 II 2 B/Ai (5TF) (179) I-4 R-5
Obverse II2 - Die marker - Diagonal die scratch up from top right cotton leaf. Also VAMs 34 & 41. Middle die state with polished nostril
and die clash marks.
Reverse B/Ai - Five tail feathers ends showing; between 2 and 3, 3 and 4, 4 and 5, 5 and 6 and under 6 TF.
Design remains in leaves of branch, below branch on left, and inside wreath bow. Die chips around R in TRUST.

1. Vam-39 is a 7/8 tailfeather variety that shows five tailfeathers emerging below the strong 7 feathers. Another attribution feature is looking at the underside of the olive branch to the left of the eagle and above the arrow feathers.
2. All VAM-39's appear to be clashed, and are actually the sub-variety VAM-39A.
