1878-P VAM-23 8TF Doubled Eagle's Beak

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley, February 1974.
This coin is a Top 100 and a WOW! Morgan VAM.
23 I211 A2/A1b (Doubled Eagle's Beak) (180) I-3 R-4
Obverse I211 - Doubled motto letters at top with E-P showing very thin tops of letters. All stars left and right are doubled slightly near rim. Date doubled slightly at bottom with 7 doubled on the right side. Nose, lips and chin are slightly doubled. LIBERTY is doubled left and up and also slightly to right.

Comments:
1. The 1878 VAM-23 is an 8 tailfeather coin with the A²/A¹b reverse, which is shared with VAM-19. This VAM has loads of doubling on the obverse. The lips, nose, forehead and chin are tremendously doubled. Additionally, LIBERTY, the E P of E PLURIBUS and a few other locations are also doubled. It appears the dies were misaligned when the working die was hubbed, creating this very desirable variety. These coins often have prooflike or DMPL surfaces and are amazingly beautiful examples of the early Morgan dollars.

Don't forget to check out the nice "shadow" effect of the doubling on the arrows. The top of the top arrowhead shows it best:

Example of a cameo DMPL specimen. Note the thin top of 'P' of PLURIBUS for cherrypicking.
