Comments:
1. 1878 VAM-223 Washed Out L. This variety has polished down features in Miss Liberty's headband. The first letters of LIBERTY are weak, especially the top left of the letter L. The reverse of the VAM-223 has a 1879 reverse with the slanted arrow feather rather than a parallel arrow feather. Besides VAM-223, VAM-188 also has a washed out L obverse but has a short arrow nock and a broken letter R in TRUST on the reverse. 1878-P VAM-84 and 1878-P VAM-84a have the long nock B1 reverse and a washed out L of LIBERTY.

More than one example also has a die gouge running from the top of the olive leave branches on the reverse out to the wreath. Do all all of the VAM-223s have this? Please post if you examine a VAM-223 that does not have the gouges.
My AU53 PCGS example does not have the die gouge. (DHalladay)

There is a second gouge at the top of the wreath near ED of UNITED:
