220(revised) II/I 34 · C3b (Tripled R, Shifted Liberty Head Back, Doubled Left Reverse) (176) I-5 R-7
Obverse II/1 34-
Reverse C3b– Left serif of A is cut down so it is not flat on top and away from wing. Bottom of serif is not slanting. Bottom feather of eagle’s right wing is squared off and raised. Hub doubling of UNITED STATES bottom inside with left inside strong on U of UNITED, I of In at top, top right edge of eagle’s right wing, and left edge of some leaves in left wreath. This is normal reverse design, except for hub doubling, used for most of the Morgan silver dollars series which also appears on some 1879 O and S dies.

Comments:
1. The VAM-220 coin has a dramatically tripled R in PLURIBUS which can be seen looking like an upside down set of stairs on the lower left of the R. Additionally, the P in PLURIBUS is significantly shifted and the Cotton Bolls are doubled. The reverse of this coin has the slanted arrow feather or reverse of 1879 design. Also on the rev '79 die, the A of AMERICA is cut down to space the A away from the Eagle's wing. The VAM-220 is the sister to the 1878-P VAM-171, which shares the same obverse, but which has the parallel arrow feather (reverse of '78) reverse.
2. Doubled LIBERTY with no shift. Doubled P and U, tripled R in PLURIBUS. Doubled 1 and 3 stars on left and 1, 3, and 4 stars on right.

The VAM 220 also shows nice doubling of the cotton bolls, cotton leaves, and on the end of the Phrygian Cap, where it is quite pronounced.
