1878-P VAM-22 Polished LIB 8 Tailfeather
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.
This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM
22 II/I 6 A2/A1e (Doubled ERTY) (180) I-3 R-4
Obverse II/I 6 - Doubled last four letters of LIBERTY, shifted down. First three letters have polishing marks.Slightly doubled E PLURIBUS UNUM at left top serifs, doubled 2 and 3 stars on left,and doubled 3 and 4 stars on right. Doubled tops of wheat leaves and grains, cotton leaves and blossoms.
Reverse A2/A1e - Doubled A and R of DOLLAR, ERICA of AMERICA, N of ONE, and both stars, two small feathers added on eagle's right and two fine lines on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing. Eagle's top and lower beak slightly doubled. Top arrow head and middle arrow shaft doubled.
1- 1878-P VAM-22 has a highly over polished obverse.
2 - All are clashed on the obverse from the VAM 80 reverse die, and are either VAM 22A or VAM 22B
The LIB of LIBERTY has been polished down and has lots of polishing lines.
LVA Plate Photos
The inside of the ear has been polished down to a nub. Polishing lines abound in the area.
The nose is polished open and clash lines emerge from the chin and lip.
On the reverse, die gouges or chips are on top of the N of ONE.
No extra berry on the outside top left leaf.
The reverse is designated A2/A1e
