1878-P VAM-162 Broken N and M

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.
This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM
This coin is a Top 30 1878 Variety
162 II/I 25 B2c (Broken N and M) (180) I-2 R-4
Obverse II/I 25- Type II LIBERTY, doubled U and R in PLURIBUS. Broken bottom serif of N and M. Bottom serif of M completely gone. Doubled star 3 left and star 5 right. 1 and 7 doubled on right side with 1 slanted to left.
Reverse B2c - Reverse with broken 'R of TRUST in the reverse motto.

1. One of six known obverses with a Broken N and M of UNUM, the others being VAM-31, VAM-40, VAM-110, VAM-145, and VAM-200.
2. The VAM-162 is recognized by PCGS. Note: obverse exhibits light obverse double clashing, which occurred when paired with VAM 145 reverse. Later die states of VAM 162 have a die polish line extending from the top right of the bow to the eagle's tail feathers.
3. The N and M in UNUM are both missing the serifs on the bottom of the letters. This is without doubt the key to this variety. LEARN THIS.
4. This is the only variety with the B2c reverse in the VAMs from 160 to 188.

See above. If, for some reason you miss these serifs being gone, we will give you a couple more items to separate this coin from the VAM 166.

The P is basically non-descript. There is some light doubling on the tops of the feet and on the outside of the top loop, but it is in no way like the other VAMs from this group.

The 1 in the date has pretty spectacular doubling, especially when compared to the other date digits. This is by far the largest shift on the 1 out of any of the coins in the 160s and 170s

The U in PLURIBUS shows doubling similar to, yet different from the VAM 166. Don’t let this fool you. When coupled with the very normal P, you will not come up with VAM 166, it will be 162.
