1878-P VAM-14.11A

Discovered 2016 by Peter Burchfield
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
14-11A I1 11 - A1c (Doubled Eyelid,Die Break 1) (189?) I-5 R-7
Obverse I1 11 – Radial die crack from denticles below 1 extending up along side of 1 to truncated neck with displaced field break all along the crack. Likely the break forced early retirement of die with short run in press because of PL fields. Led to being very rare die combo.
Reverse A1c - Letters in UNITED doubled strongly on top and bottom. STATES OF AMERICA letters doubled at bottom. ONE DOLLAR letters doubled at top. Left wreath strongly doubled. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing.

LVA Comments:

1. The VAM-14.11 is an ultra rarity with perhaps a dozen known. This is an eight tail feather variety. The A1c reverse is shared by VAM' s 3 4 5 14-6 14-7 14-11 14.11A 14-12 14-14 14-17 14-18 All but VAMs 3 & 4 are major rarities.
2. The VAM-14.11 is defined by two "spikes" in front of the eye. The first is upward short and square-ended. The second is longer downward and sharply pointed. The letters in 'E PLURIBU' are all doubled, showing small notches on the left serifs.
