1878-P VAM-113 Flake on Cheek

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965. Revised December 2017 - pacificwr
113 II/I 15 - B2a (Flake on Cheek) (194) I-2 R-4
Obverse II/I 15 - Type II LIBERTY. Doubled N, U, M in UNUM. Doubled 2-7 left stars and 1, 2, and 5 right stars. Doubled 1 at top right and bottom. Both 8's in date doubled at top left outside. Die creak through ear center and large die flake on cheek.
Key Identifier - Die flake on check in front of ear.

Large chip is on the cheek to the left of the ear. Surface is rough between the hair lock and the ear. Crack in the ear has a small break at its right end.

LIBERTY exhibits the typical II/I obverse doubling.
The nostril is weak.
A sequence of chips looks, at first glance, like an arc die scratch.
