1878-CC VAM-24 Doubled Leaves
Discovered by Jeff Oxman, July 1984.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
24(revised) II6 - B1f (Doubled Cotton Leaves)(179) I-4 R-4
Obverse II6 - Doubled cotton leaves and bolls on right side. Eyelash doubled at top.
Reverse B1f - Die marker - Vertical die scratch in eagle's left wing opposite neck-wing junction.
- The 1878-CC VAM 24 has doubled leaves and cotton blossom in Liberty's hair. Note the alignment of the CC where the right side of the CC lines up with the curve of the bow to the left of the bow knot. There is also a dot of metal in the left C of the CC mintmark that is not present in 1878-CC VAM 6 and 1878-CC VAM 18. Although the Top 100 book claims the VAM 24 is more rare than the VAM 6 or VAM 18, it appears that the VAM 18 is actually the toughest of the varieties. VAM 24 is certainly a tough find in its own right, however!
