1889-P VNC-60

Collaboration by SD Members

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set just to the left edge of what is considered a normally placed Date (Far Date). The digit 9 is set slightly higher than the other digits of the Date. The right inside Ear wall is, to a small degree, doubled.

Obverse Marker: Die file lines are seen below the lower edge of the Phrygian Cap.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: None.

Reverse Marker: None.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:

A) I have listed this Morgan as being a VNC (Variety Not Certified) as it has not been attributed by any fee-based attribution service.

B) A Pick-Up-Point (PUP) has been noted on the Reverse; scratches on Eagle's Right Wing. However, I consider confirming the existence of that PUP as an unnecessary diagnostic step. After all, the VAM-60 has an established Obverse Marker, the much more visible die file lines located just below the Phrygian Cap.

C) This is a double clashed specimen of the VAM-60. I can find no evidence of a letter transfer on this coin.

D) Clash marks are seen on the Obverse at Liberty's Nose-to-Chin area. These clash marks were created by the clashing of Left Laurel Wreath Cluster #1. In some cases, the clash marks are the result of the clashing of Cluster #1 and Cluster #2.

E) In the Field off the bottom third part of the Phrygian Cap are clash marks associated with a coin that has experienced two separate clash events (a double clashed coin). These clash marks were created by the clashing of Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2, located on the Reverse side of the Morgan.

F) Remnants of clashing can be seen exiting the Eagle's Right Wing and heading toward the n of the first word of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. The remnants appear as a darkness in the Field from the Wing to the n. This clash feature is created by the clashing of Lady Liberty's Neck Line.

G) Left Laurel Wreath Cluster #1 show the results of this coin's clash events. These are very weak marks that appear as a darkness in the Field between the Wreath Cluster and the Eagle's Right Wing. They were created by the clashing of Liberty's Lip and Chin. Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2 also show the effects of this coin's clash events. These clash marks are seen between the Wreath Clusters and the Eagle's Left Wing. These marks were created by the clashing of the bottom third of the Phrygian Cap; and are sometimes referred to as a "Bat Wing" feature.

H) A crack can be seen running from the E in STATES to the F in OF located on the Reverse. Another crack is seen running from the Rim above the E to the F.
