1880-O VAM-6A 8/7 Ear with Reverse Gouge

Discovered by Ted Clark, November 1968. Revised 2011.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.

Obverse III25– Clashed die with partial incuse st of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge. Faint tick of n next to neck from In of reverse.
Reverse C3a– Faint raised designer’s initial M from obverse above d in God. Die gouge on left side of left wreath.
Comments: Surface issues
1- This marriage comes in two distinct stages, with and without the clash. In Elite Clashed Morgan Dollars, Mark Kimpton states "Approximately one out of every three VAM 6A's I have seen has had clashing." He also points out that the unclashed version of the VAM 6A(what is now VAM-6 Die #1) is the beginning of a die progression VAM-6 Die #1 no clash, 6A clash, 49, 6, 6C two obverse clashes, and 6C with three obverse clashes.
