1921-P VAM-3BV Scribbling Die Scratches #23

Used for both proof and business strikes
3BV IV - D2a (Scribbling Die Scratches #23) I-2 R-5
Reverse D2a - Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg, between eagle's left wing and body and in middle of both wings. Die marker - Single heavy diagonal polishing line inside wreath bow.
1- December 2008 update: The coin in these photos is the VAM-3BV discovery coin, which turns out to be a business strike of the first documented D2 (16-berry) proof dies. The proof example is in the Smithsonian collection in Washington D.C. and was discovered by Jack Lee. See VAMview 14 for more details.
2- Update April 27, 2012: Same dies as 1921-P VAM-3BV, but the plate coins for each show both common and unique scribbles to each variety. More investigation to come.
3- Update November 20, 2012: I was able to view a very interesting coin at the recent Baltimore Show. It resides in an NGC MS65 DPL holder. The obverse and reverse dies match the "Lee Proof". After seeing this coin in hand, I am 99% sure this obverse was also used on the Chapman proofs. Both have matching ear die chips and chips below the date. - Jack Lee
4 - Update July 2016. Found a raw one with PL/DMPL surfaces, no clash. It appears both the obverse planchet and the die are polished as the high areas of Obverse have die polish (die) and the '9' of the date is polished inside (planchet). Chapman Obverse again looks right.
5- VAM-3FV VAM-3EQ VAM-3EI 1921-P VAM-3BV all have similar polish line in CA of AMERICA. You can add 3HK to the list of VAMs that share this marriage. NOTE BY Ash Harrison (1/25/2021): These markers in the ear and by the date are part of the Hub Die. I would have to look much closer to make a claim on the obverse matching the Chapman...
