1898-S VAM-8A Near Date, S Tilted Right

Discovered by Steve Sabella, November 1980.
8A III2 5 - C3d (Near Date, S Tilted Right) (187) I-2 R-4
Obverse III2 5 - Date set further left than normal.
Reverse C3d - Mint mark tilted slightly to the right. Two thick die gouges through wreath bow loop.

Comments:
1. The 1898-S VAM8A came before the VAM8 in production.
2. This also has an undocumented repunched second 8.

Note the unlisted doubling at the top of the second 8. It all but disappears with the reworking of the die before the 1898-S VAM8 was produced.
