1898-P VAM-3 Near Date

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley, February 1974.
3 III2 3 - C3a (Near Date) (190) I-2 R-3
Obverse III2 3 - Date set further left than normal. Open and closed 9's.

1. Since VAM numbers are assigned by die classification, and not just by die pairing, multiple die pairings may exist.
2. 3.1 denotes 1898-P VAM 3 die pair #1, 3.2 denote 1898-P VAM 3 die pair #2

This is an open 9.

The small die breaks are around the eagle's left wing tip and by the "A" and "R" of AMERICA.

There are several sizeable die scratches around the eagle's legs and tail.

Die 3.1

This next set of LFCP photos is more akin to the date photos that Logan McKechnie placed on the page back in 2009. It has some interesting features that include the three strong gouges into the field from the top wheat kernel. In all of the messaging concerning the 1898-P VAMs, there is no mention of this feature in any post. This set is from the [Heritage Auctions].
