1898-O VAM-20 Re-punched Large Over Small Date

Discovered by Jerry Sajbel. February 1998. Revised June 16, 2015.
20 (revised) III214 · C3a (Re-punched Large Over Small Date) (181) I-5 R-6/7
Obverse III214– Dramatic re-punched date with large over small digits. Unique to Morgan dollar series. Small date logo of Indian head cent, Liberty nickel and Barber quarter dollar size. Digit tops initially punched into die with logo tilted up and slightly skewed with right side higher, possibly to test die hardness as were many MPDs on Morgan dies.
Left 8 has prominent vertical spike in lower inside of upper loop, short vertical spike at top inside of lower loop plus tiny raised metal between loops on the left side from top of small 1. Horizontal curved line between upper loops of left 8 and 9 plus tiny raised metal at lower left outside of 9 upper loop from top of small left 8 top. Vertical curved line at right top outside of 9 upper loop with short curved line at right inside of 9 upper loop from small 9 top. Right 8 has prominent vertical spike in lower left inside of upper loop likely from die chip, connecting curved line at top inside of upper loop with short vertical spike at top inside of lower loop of small 8 top loop and upper left of lower loop.
Die Marker - Diagonal die polishing lines thru RT of LIBERTY.
Reverse C3a -
Die Marker - Diagonal die polishing lines at eagle's wing-neck.

LVA Comments:
"In my humble opinion, as a unique and very visible die variety, it deserves to be recognized as the top variety of re-punched, doubled and misplaced date digits."

Re-Punched date.

You can see that there are multiple SMALLER digits in the date. We need to do overlays to determine which punch was used.
