1897-P VAM-11 Low Date

Discovery 2010
11 III2 10- C3a (Low Date) (190) I-2 R-5
Obverse III2 10 - Date set low and at left edge of normal lateral position.
(1) Since VAM numbers are assigned by die classification, and not just by die pairing, multiple die pairings may exist.
(2) There seems to be confusion between VAM 11 and VAM 7. As there are pictures from Leroy Van Allen for VAM 11 and not VAM 7, we can't be sure that VAM 7 and VAM 11 aren't the same. If a coin matches the VAM 11 description and Leroy's photo, it is VAM 11, even though the photo shows a very slight slant to the date.

This coin is from the fabulous Jerry Karschner set of The Shrike Set - The Karschner Collection of Morgan Dollars.
Karschner “started collecting in 1980. "A friend owned a coin shop in my home town and sold the coin shop to me after he moved to North Carolina,” Jerry relates. He “also had an insurance agency at the time.” “I own a seven-passenger twin engine Aero Commander airplane and the model name of the plane is a SHRIKE,” Karschner says proudly. He named his registry sets of coins after his plane. To see all 124 Morgans sold, click on the Heritage Link above.
