1888-O is a common date in grades up to MS64 with typically mediocre strike and luster, although choice specimens can be found. Prooflike coin are not rare and are well struck. Variety collectors will find a veritable bonanza for this date, starting with the two most mainstream Morgan dollar varieties, the VAM 1B "Scarface" and the VAM 4 "Hot Lips." There are two different mint marks used, with the Oval O being scarce, especially in mint state. A distinct clashed E paired with an obverse die break (VAM 1A3) can be found in mint state. A heavy obverse die gouge at the rim is featured on VAM 7A. Fans of rotated dies will find the VAM 9 not only with rotations of up to 175°, but also a doubled reverse and date in the denticles. The VAM 15 is a rather scarce repunched mint mark.
