1886-P VAM-23 Doubled Ear, Die Gouge Star

Discovered by Herb Zepke, February 2001.
23 III222 · C3a (Doubled Ear, Die Gouge Star) (189) I-3 R-6
Obverse III222– Slightly doubled ear on left and right inside. Diagonal die gouge from rim towards 7th left star.
Comments:
1- Date is in the normal lateral position with a high 6, which is typical (and generally unlisted) for 1886 obverses.
The characteristic comet gouge is easily seen over the 7th left star, pointing toward the base of the E.
A couple reverse detail shots to help with future die matching.
2- Large glob of metal in wing/neck gap.
