1886-P VAM-23 Doubled Ear, Die Gouge Star

Discovered by Herb Zepke, February 2001.
23 III222 · C3a (Doubled Ear, Die Gouge Star) (189) I-3 R-6
Obverse III222– Slightly doubled ear on left and right inside. Diagonal die gouge from rim towards 7th left star.

Comments:
1. Date is in the normal lateral position with a high 6, which is typical (and generally unlisted) for 1886 obverses.
2. The characteristic comet gouge is easily seen over the 7th left star, pointing toward the base of the E.
3. A couple reverse detail shots to help with future die matching.
4. Large glob of metal in wing/neck gap.
