1884, while treated as one of the more common Philadelphia Morgan dollars due to its very high mintage, has uncirculated population about 1/10th of that of 1884-O and less than half of the 1884-CC. There is a pretty large range of quality for these, so it's best to be selective and find one with good luster and strike. Prooflike coins are not rare as a percentage of the uncirculated population, but in absolute numbers is more difficult to find. Variety collectors will find two of the most mysterious varieties of the series in 1884. The Top 100 VAM 3 and VAM 4 "Dot" varieties, with a dot intentionally added to both dies near the designer's initial are an enigma that remains unexplained to date. The VAM 2A provides one of the more common clashed E varieties and is available uncirculated, unlike many clashed E Morgans.
