1880-O VAM-4 80/79 (Crossbar Overdate with Small O)

Discovered by Walter Breen, February 1966. (Revised- 2011 James Cerny)
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
4 (revised) III2 3 - C3a (80/79) (176) I-4 R-4
Obverse III2 3- 80 Re punched over 79. Faint ears appear above the 8 and metal is at the top within the upper loop. 0 has metal inside the upper loop. 1 doubled on right side of shaft. First 8 doubled on left inside and right outside of lower loop. Second 8 doubled at left outside of both loops. Slightly doubled profile from forehead to chin and top of Phrygian cap. Very slightly doubled to quadrupled some left and right stars.
Reverse C3a - Normal die, round I O mint mark centered and upright.

1. The VAM-4 1880/79 overdate has a strong remnant of the 7 under the 8 that can be seen as metal in the upper loop of the 8.
2. Both VAM-4 and VAM-5 of 1880 have a large quantity of metal in this upper loop. The easiest way to tell the two VAMs apart is looking at the mint mark on the reverse. The small O mint mark is VAM-4, the larger oval O is a VAM-5.
