1879-S VAM-51 PAF, Tripled Stars, Doubled 9 & Motto, Engraved Wing Feather

Discovered by Calvin Cherry, February 2001.
This is a Reverse of '78 (PAF) coin and a Top 100* VAM variety.

Obverse III2 26 – Closed 9 and slightly doubled at right inside of both loops and left outside of lower loop. All right stars tripled and all left stars doubled to tripled towards rim. Tops of E PLURIBUS UNUM and top of Phrygian cap doubled towards rim. Die markers- Tripled 1 to 3 right stars, doubled top of Phrygian cap.
Reverse B2i – Latest die state. Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. Die marker- Diagonal polishing line in middle of eagle’s left wing.

1. This reverse die was used on VAM-43, VAM-50, VAM-51, VAM-52, and VAM-67.
2. VAM-4, VAM-23, VAM-25, VAM-43, VAM-50, VAM-51, VAM-52, and VAM-56 all have an unbroken R in TRUST.
3. This obverse shared with vam 68.

The nine in the date is doubled on the inside of the upper loop, doubled on the inside and outside of the lower loop as well.
The top of the Phrygian cap is also doubled.
All stars are doubled or tripled toward the rim.
There are numerous die gouges in the left wing.
There is an engraved feather between the eagle's right leg and wing and there is a die gouge in the Eagle's right wing.
One of the best pick up points is the die crack above the mint mark that extends into the wreath.
