1879-S VAM-50 PAF, Doubled Date, Engraved Wing Feather

Discovered by Calvin Cherry, February 2001.

This is a Reverse of '78 (PAF) coin and a Top 100* VAM variety.

Obverse III2 25 – Closed 9. 7 doubled at top as two arcs on field and on upper left of stem. Doubled URI in PLURIBUS on right side. Die markers- 7 doubled at top and R at left inside of upper loop.
Reverse B2i – Later die state than VAM-43. Acid treated leaves to strengthen them in left wreath opposite ON, U, NI with rough surfaces and raised dots. Die later lightly polished weaking acid treated leaves at ON & UN. Acid treated leaves on all die states that varies with die polishing and wear. Die marker- Diagonal polishing line in middle of eagle’s left wing. Intermediate die state.

  1. This reverse die was used on VAM-43, VAM-50, VAM-51, VAM-52, and VAM-67.
  2. VAM-4, VAM-23, VAM-25, VAM-43, VAM-50, VAM-51, VAM-52, and VAM-56 all have an unbroken R in TRUST.
  3. The 7 in the date is doubled at the top, both left and right, and the stem is doubled on the inside, lower shaft.
  4. The 9 is a so-called closed type.
  5. Die marker- Diagonal polishing line in middle of eagle’s left wing. Intermediate die state.

The R in PLURIBUS is doubled on the inside left of the upper loop.
There is a series of die gouges in the eagle's left, viewer's right, wing.
The 'r' in Trust is full.
There is an engraved feather between the eagle's right leg and wing.
The mintmark is slightly tilted to the right and there are a few faint polish lines in the bow.
