1879-S VAM-39 PAF, Engraved Wing Feather
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, March 1981.
This is a Reverse of '78 (PAF) coin and a Top 100* VAM variety.
39 III2 1 · B2g (PAF, Engraved Wing Feather) (183) I-4 R-4
Obverse III2 1 – Normal die of closed 9. Die markers- Diagonal polishing line in hair behind ear, three horizontal polishing lines between wheat grains.
Reverse B2g – Intermediate die state without diagonal polishing line in eagle’s right wing. Has the double polishing lines on lower inside of right wing next to leg.
Comments:
1. VAM-9, VAM-35, VAM-39, VAM-42 all have a partially broken serif in the R of TRUST. The top portion is missing, but almost all of the shape is visible.
2. Earliest die state without diagonal polishing line in eagle’s right wing is 1879-S VAM-35. Later reverse B2g die state with additional thin diagonal polishing line in lower part of eagle’s right wing is VAM-34. VAM-34A is an even later die state.
