1879-S VAM-35 PAF, Doubled 9, Engraved Wing Feather
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1979, Revised 2019.
This is a Reverse of '78 (PAF) coin and a Top 100* VAM variety.
35 III2 5 · B2g (PAF, Doubled 9, Engraved Wing Feather) (183) I-4 R-4
Obverse III2 5 – Closed 9 in date with doubled left outside of lower loop. Same die as VAM-9 but later die state. Die Marker- Slightly diagonal single die polishing line in lower right hair vee. Pitting in LIBERTY. Single diagonal die polishing line lower part of T & TY i LIBERTY.
Reverse B2g – Earliest die state without diagonal polishing line in eagle’s right wing. Full upper and lower tail feathers. Mostly horizontal die polishing lines in and around wreath bow. Horizontal bar of r in Trust weak but has raised bar at bottom and complete line at top edge.
Comments:
1. Later reverse B2g die state with additional thin diagonal polishing line in lower part of eagle’s right wing is VAM-34. VAM-34A is an even later die state.
2. VAM-35, VAM-39 have same reverse
