1879-S Rev 78 VAM-34B PAF, Engraved Wing Feather

Discovered by Brian Raines, September 2003.
This is a Reverse of '78 (PAF) coin and a Top 100* VAM variety.
34B III2 2e · B2g (PAF, Engraved Wing Feather) ( ? ) I-4 R-7
Obverse III2 2e – Die markers– Diagonal line from left side of lower cotton leaf, diagonal polishing line between cotton boll stems and die chip dot on Phrygian cap fold.
NOTE:Vam 34A obverse is the same as 77/77A but a LDS and polished down
Reverse B2g – Later die state than VAM-34 with the additional polishing line in eagle’s right wing.

1. This obverse die was used on VAM-16A, VAM-34B , VAM-57, VAM-77, VAM-77A, and VAM-83. An earlier stage of this exact die is used for VAMs 77 and 77A.
2. Only recently discovered in 2003, with just 6 known circulated specimens, the finest being low AU. A few folks out there are putting together complete VAM sets, but this coin and the VAM-56 are making completing an 1879-S Rev 78 set quite a challenge. David Wang is the pioneer on these VAMs and publishes regular population and value data.
3. VAM-34 is considered quite scare in its own right, with VAMs 34A and 34B each harder to locate. There are several types of broken 'rs on 1878 reverses and it's easy to confuse them. VAM-34 has the broken 'r' in "trust" with the top of the 'r' completely missing.

POPULATION:18+ 4 Details in the SSDCR=22 especimens registered as of aug/2020,most in the range of vg to xf with only 1 ms63! in fact xf40 is the pivotal grade for this variety, and if one is found in au or better is a cost for celebration!

Comparison of normal versus polished initials. VAM-34 and 34A are normal, but 34B has the polished area. A subtle difference!
