1879-S VAM-28 Doubled 1-9

Discovered by Martin Field, October 1978. Revised 2013
28 (revised) III2 14 ∙ C3a (Doubled 1-9) (185) I-2 R-5
Obverse III2 14 – Doubled 1-9 in date. 1 doubled below upper crossbar. 9 doubled slightly on left outside of both loops.
Die Marker: Horizontal polishing line across ear.
Reverse C3a – Normal die of C3 type with medium IV S mint mark centered and upright.

Slight doubling on left side of 9

Horizontal scratch across ear.

From a thread in June 5, 2008 member, mitzydog, had the picture below as well as others trying to I.D. these gouges, which are on all VAM-28's that I've seen. (RH)
