1879-S VAM-106 Doubled Date, Hair Ribbon Gouge, Acid Treated Leaves

Obverse III2 56 – Slightly doubled date with 1 at lower edge of upper crossbar, 8 at lower left outside of upper loop, 7 at crossbar lower edge and bottom edge of vertical shaft and 9 at left outside of both loops. Wide striated and segmented die gouge 0.437" long starting at rear of Liberty head neck as very wide and high raised striated gouge of 0.045" by 0.045" and continuing to right in hair gap above 9 as wide striated gouge, hair gap above first right star as wide raised bump with faint horizontal lines, and some lines to the left, and then to hair above third right star as several lines. Longest and widest associated series of segmented die gouges known for the Morgan dollar obverse and reverse. (Formerly VAM1B1)
Reverse C3ap – Slightly doubled ICA bottom serifs of AMERICA towards rim and some doubled outside leaves in right wreath. Engraving on two leaves above N in ONE. Acid treated leaves at U & IT of UNITED. First reverse die used with gouge obverse. Light vertical die polishing lines in fields possibly to reduce die crack at top of eagle's left wing.
Die Marker- A few horizontal die polishing lines at top inside of wreath bow.
