1879-CC is one of the key dates of the series. With a mintage three times the more common 85-CC, it would seem that a large percentage of the issue was melted in 1918. 1879-CC is typically well struck. Those looking to purchase uncirculated specimens will find them with prooflike surfaces frequently. The most popular variety, the VAM 3 Large/Small CC, or so-called "capped CC", is also the most common and actually traded at a discount before varieties were collected, since collectors wanted a perfect CC mint mark. VAM 6 is another interesting variety with crumbled stars and obverse lettering.
