1878-S VAM-80 Engraved Wing Feather, Lines in Eagle, Doubled E-PL-R-B

Discovered by Michael Fey,January 2003. Revised 2012.
This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety.
80(revised) II 38 · B2n (Engraved Wing Feather, Lines in Eagle, Doubled E-PL-R-B) (184) I-3 R-5
Obverse II 38– Slightly doubled E at bottom and right side of vertical bar, P at bottom, L at top left and bottom, R at left and B at bottom and right inside of both loops. LIBERTY slightly doubled to left. Die marker - Fine diagonal polishing line at eye front and double horizontal line at back of nostril. Fourth right star broken.
Reverse B2n– Heavy die polishing lines in middle of both wings and two diagonal lines between eagle’s legs. Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. R in Trust partially broken.

1. VAM 80 has diagonal die scratch in front of miss Liberty’s eye and double gouges in nostril.
2. Reverse B2n also used with 1878-S VAM-15 and 1878-S VAM-89 and VAM-80
3. Line in Eye is also found on VAM-90
