Here is a picture of the "wart on the eagles beak" I mentioned in the discussion section of 1878-S V-5
I believe this big rust pit occurs on V-5, V-7, V-46, and subvariety V-46A
Leroy Van Allen uses an Obverse Pick Up Point to confirm the 1878-S VAM 5; it is two vertical polishing lines right of the lower cotton leaf and is pictured on Page 59 of the 1878 S Guide.
1878-S VAM-5 Doubled 878, Tripled Eyelid

Discovered by Paul Williams, August 1966. Revised 2012
This coin is a Top 30 1878-S Variety.
5(revised) II 4 · B2i (Doubled 878, Tripled Eyelid) (184) I-4 R-4
Obverse II 4 – Both 8s doubled on right side of upper loop opening. Crossbar of the 7 is doubled at top and right side. S of PLURIBUS and UNU of UNUM slightly doubled on right side. LUR-US doubled on left side. All letters of LIBERTY doubled with shift down. Lower hair slightly doubled. Nostril, lips, chin and neck doubled. Cotton leaves doubled at top. Wheat leaves slightly doubled on right side. Eyelid slightly tripled. Point on number 4 right star not broken. Die chip in middle of cheek and two at lower right cotton leaves. Thread-like impression below ear next to hair front.
Reverse B2i – Feather engraved between eagle’s right wing and leg. Center of wings over polished. R in Trust broken. Very slight doubling of TED STATES AMER.

Comments:

 1. There's a lot going on with this coin. The date is doubled on the right side. The eyelid is tripled with slight gaps between each instance of the eyelid. The 4th right star is not broken in this case. There is a die chip in middle of cheek, and a good sized rust pit on the eagle's beak.
 2. Most of Liberty's lower hair is also doubled, not just the lower edge as may be inferred from the specification.
 3. The reverse shares the same die as VAM 46 and VAM 7 which have the R in TRUST broken and a uniquely engraved wing feather where it attaches to the body.
