1878-P VAM-81 Polished Ear
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.
81 II/I 7 B1c (Spiked P) (180) I-2 R-4
Obverse II/I 7 - Type II Liberty with thick letters. Doubled E, P and R in PLURIBUS. Doubled 187 in date with 1 doubled on left of shaft, 8 on top surface and 7 on left of top serif. All left stars and first three right doubled. Area around nose and lips over-polished. Fine diagonal polishing line through R in LIBERTY.
Key Identifier - Lines in cap ribbon.
Reverse B1c- Die over polished with last three leaves disconnected from olive branch and blank spots in middle of both of eagle's wings. Die chip on eagle's right wing in middle next to body. (Also VAM-82)
Comments:
1. The Top inside of Liberty's ear has been polished down to the point that little of the inside design remains.
2. The first two stars to the right of the date are notched.
3. There is a clash mark at the top of the left wreath on the Reverse
4. The top 3 leaves of the olive branch are disconnected.
5. It has been noticed that on all VAM-81s, the reverse has the clashed lip from the obverse next to the left wreath. (this feature is not found on the VAM-82 shared reverse)
6. The progression of this obverse die is VAM 81, 33, then 30. VAM 30A is the terminal stage of this die of course.

Doubled E, P and R in PLURIBUS.
Below left, 1 and 2 left stars---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------. Below right, 1-3 right stars.
Die chips on eagle's right wing in middle next to body.
The photo below shows the clash from Liberty's lips and is a pick up point for the VAM-81 B-1 reverse, as it is the only B1 reverse with this feature and Normally the clashed lips would never be used as a P.U.P. as it is common on all Morgans. However, it is on all VAM-81's and helps to distinquish VAM-81 from VAM-82.
Key Identifier - Lines in cap ribbon.
